About the Studio
ECE has taken a proactive approach to shaping engineering education by creating the first innovative, state-of-the-art, multimedia Communication Studio on the Georgia Tech campus. The Coleman Family Professional Communication Studio is designed to provide undergraduate ECE students with the space to work on all types of communication tasks: written, oral, graphical, and digital.
The Studio is extraordinary in the scope of its mission: to work in concert with the ECE curriculum to prepare students to be the next generation engineers, engineers who have exceptional analytical skills, who are strong communicators, and who are leaders with the ability to address the world’s complex and changing challenges. The Communication Studio accomplishes these goals by providing important resources and services:
- Presentation rehearsal studio and conference room equipped with video capture technology for students to record, play back, and critique their own individual and group presentations.
- One-on-one technical writing assistance from trained, experienced ECE graduate students and writing faculty.
- Multi-purpose room for groups to work on design and research projects
- PCs equipped with all relevant ECE software
- Comfortable lounge area.
- Interactive multimedia whiteboard for seminars, workshops, and presentations.
- Library of communication and ECE resources, including handouts, textbooks, CDs, and DVDs.
- ECE art gallery, featuring original works by students, faculty, and staff

About the Donors
The new Coleman Family Professional Communication Studio is made possible by a generous gift from Michael (BSEE ’82) Coleman, his wife, Jennifer, and his mother, Harriett Coleman. Michael’s late father, Jeff Coleman was also a Georgia Tech graduate (BSEE ’56) who founded Coleman Research Corporation in 1980, a start-up aerospace company which focused on providing systems integration and engineering and analytical services to government and commercial customers. The company was truly a family affair. Jeff’s wife, Harriett, served on the board, and his children, Michael and Cindy, worked for the company as engineers. In 1995, Michael sold the family business, and then formed Coleman Technologies, Inc., which provides weapons system design to the U.S. Government. Michael retired from CTI in the late ‘90s.
In October 2004, while on campus for Family Weekend, Michael and his mother, Harriett, heard about the proposal for the Professional Communication Studio during the ECE lab tours. The Colemans enthusiastically supported the plans, and the family’s financially generosity made the long-held goal of creating this state-of-the-art facility a reality. |
